Sex and the City is definitely an unforgettable show and besides its humor and a life lesson or two it taught women everywhere, one of the best things about it were the Carrie Bradshaw outfits and we can call them like that because now they represent an iconic trademark for style, grace, courage even and also fame and fortune for the designers who created them. We will see ten Carrie Bradshaw outfits that made history because they became a fashion icon all over the world and given the fact that Sarah Jessica Parker was able by contract to keep all – and we mean ALL – her clothes and shoes from the show (changing up to five different outfits each episode), we can only imagine (and dream about) how her dressing looks like.
But it is summer and now, more than ever, women want to forget the heavy clothing and get out there in the sun looking fabulous. No matter what designers have in store for us this season, going back to a classic is always a good idea for inspiration. So today we will see the top outfits Carrie wore along the show that made history, asking for your forgiveness if we happened not to pick some of your personal favorites. But they were thousands!
10 Carrie Bradshaw Outfits
1. The Tutu
This outfit made history not because it is a little absurd, a little too funny-looking (especially for a 30 years old woman), but because it became Carrie’s trademark. In the episode credits we can remember Carrie walking downtown Manhattan in her tank top and tutu and getting splashed with water by the bus that carries her sexy picture. The tutu shows up in the credits of each episode and, let’s not forget, all the girls voted for it to stay (in the first movie), when Carrie decided to clean the closet and move together with Mr. Big. Do women feel ease at heart wearing such piece? Not many, we’d say, as you have to have damn fine looking legs, but for Bradshaw it made her who she was.
2. The Romantic Dress
Carrie is known for her odd but spectacular combinations, being probably one of the few women wearing sandals and a fur coat in winter, making a fashion statement against any medical doctor who’d suggest otherwise, but looking gorgeous nonetheless. Used to see her combining colors, clothes and accessories from all styles and trends, not little was our surprise to see her in season 3 looking almost classical: pink and pale romantic dress, an assorted purse (which is not something she’d do on a regular basis), the transparent vintage shoes with just a little touch of extreme and almost invisible accessories. That cocktail dress made her look spectacular and is something any woman should try once in a lifetime.
3. The Flower
We are not sure she was the one who introduced big (or sometimes even enormous) flowers as fashion accessories, but at least they look gorgeous on her. This is one of those Carrie Bradshaw outfits that made history not only because the dress looks spectacular (and many women would wear it on special occasions, not in the street to go have brunch), but it also taught the most conservative of us that it is perfectly alright not to match the dress with the shoes and still look like you descended directly from the cover of Vogue Magazine.
4. The Versace Gown
What can a woman ask more? She looks drop dead gorgeous, she just moved to Paris and she is loved by an eccentric rich and talented international artist. Well… maybe for him to come home… At the end of the show Carrie broke our hearts with her story in Paris together with Petrovsky and the night she stays to wait for him for indefinite hours long was a breathtaking scene, especially because she wore this Versace dress. Looking like a modern Cinderella, Carrie is unforgettably beautiful and sad and the moment we see her fallen asleep on the bed, surrounded by the hundreds of dress curls, we all took pause for a second to let the exquisite beauty to sink in.
5. The Stripes
Nobody wore stripes like Carrie. Vertical, horizontal, colored, two-toned and even giving us the impression of an optical illusion. Yes, we are definitely talking about her outfit chosen to leave for Paris (we do seem like we’re having a thing for traveling all over the world, don’t we?). As she said, some outfits can wait for a while to match some special occasions, and this particular one makes no exception. Not many women are in favor of the stripes, as they can ruin everything if not worn properly, but Carrie looked amazing in her “Paris and love, here I come” outfit by Sonia Rykiel. It’s hard to find this dress anywhere on the Internet to buy, many women complained about it, but here’s the closest dress to the memorable Carrie outfit.
6. The mix – match
Now we can’t talk forever about Carrie Bradshaw’s outfits that made history without mentioning her mix-matches, as she is their undisputed queen. How hard it is to find perfect combinations without looking ridiculous, (well, most of the times) that’s a secret only she can tell. But here, in her Prada and Marni clothes, she made a riot among women, as they finally understood how one can wear contrasting colors and floral motifs without looking like a flower shop. And that above-the-belly top isn’t bad either.
7. The Vintage
Just as she wears labels, Carrie also can impress with a vintage, almost classical look. The long, light dress, adorned with golden accessories to match her blonde hair made one of the Season’s 3 finest. Golden metallic jewelry go great with her dark blue outfit and the long necklace is something we all wished for or own already. Discrete make-up, just to enhance her natural beauty (but don’t let yourselves be fooled, it’s harder to get a “natural” look with the help of make-up) and a rather colorful purse and here you have Carrie in one of those outfits that made history.
8. The Military
This woman can wear a cocktail dress, a quirky outfit, a business suit and a military style attire with the same grace and attitude. Known for her curious combinations and mix-matches, it is not unusual for her to pick up a military-style vest, belts and sandals and if you browse through your memory, you’ll remember that in between the floral-statement trench and the nautical – inspired dress, Carrie wore a lot of (almost manly) vests and belts and outstanding footwear.
9. The fur coat
Few episodes showed Carrie without her eccentric fur coats, fashion statements that looked so fabulous, they probably sold by millions during the show’s airing. How in the Lord’s name can you go watch a baseball match wearing a fur coat, how can you mix it with both textile boots and sandals, how is it possible to get out in the street for lunch or a date in a fur coat (in some seasons that look nothing like winter), these are some thoughts that crossed women’s minds each time Carrie displayed one of her spectacular furs.
10. The Shoes
We couldn’t finish this list without mentioning the shoes. Carrie Bradshaw taught us three important, life time lessons: fight for love, always, dress classy, sassy, smart and stylish and never live without the two most important men in a girl’s life: Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo. OK, maybe this one is not a life lesson, but if this show had something besides dramas, stories, fun, fashion and sex, this show had shoes. $40.000 worth of shoes, as Carrie mentioned in one episode.
Carrie’s shoes and footwear can fill a fashion museum and then some, as no matter the label, the season, the style or the color, the clothes-match or the occasion, her shoes were a statement in each and every case. Our personal favorites? Everybody’s personal favorites, of course, the wedding shoes…
It is not easy to pick the most outstanding Carrie Bradshaw outfits that made history, as fashion magazines are doing it for years and there are still enough debates to make you wonder, but one thing is certain: best way to decide which Carrie Bradshaw look fits you best is to re-watch the show and the movies, have a few laughs and get your inspiration directly from the source.
